Glioblastoma Therapeutics Network (NCI)
Scope: The National Cancer Institute seeks (U19)
research program cooperative agreement applications
for the Glioblastoma Therapeutics Network
announcement to improve the treatment of adult
glioblastoma by developing novel effective agents that
can cross the blood-brain barrier and testing them in the
clinic.
Deadline: Letters of Intent are due 30 days before the
deadline; proposals, Nov. 19, 2020.
Funds: $6 million in FY2021 for four to five awards. The
maximum project period is five years.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities; for-profit
organizations, including small businesses; nonprofit
organizations; and state, local, special district and Native
American tribal governments; among others.
Areas: NCI said projects focusing on small molecules
are preferred, and biologic agents that target either the
tumor or the immunosuppressive microenvironment and
that meet the criteria for this concept may be proposed;
research projects may be hypothesis-driven or
hypothesis-generating; and each research project must
be led by a minimum of two co-leaders: one laboratory
scientist and one clinical researcher.

Research Specialist Award (NCI)
Scope: The National Cancer Institute seeks (R50)
research specialist award applications for the Research
Specialist (Core-based Scientist) Award announcement
to encourage the development of stable research career
opportunities for exceptional scientists who want to
continue to pursue research within the context of an
existing NCI-funded basic, translational, clinical or
population science cancer research program, but not
serve as independent investigators.
Deadline: Letters of Intent are due 30 days before the
deadline; proposals, Jan. 4, 2021.
Funds: The number of awards depends on
appropriations and the submission of a sufficient
number of quality applications. The maximum project
period is five years.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities; for-profit
organizations, including small businesses; nonprofit
organizations; and state, local, special district and Native
American tribal governments; among others.
Areas: NCI said funding is intended to provide salary
support for a sustained period of time and encourage
the development of a stable career for exceptional
researchers who want to continue to support cancer
research within the context of a core/shared resource/
central scientific support. The award is intended
for research-oriented investigators with significant,
relevant experience who have shown clear evidence
of productivity and research excellence in the field of
their training and would like to support a particular
research activity (e.g., core/shared resource/central
scientific support), with the goal of making significant
contributions to behavioral, biomedical (basic or clinical),
computational, bioimaging or bioengineering research
that is relevant to the NCI mission.
