One of the more exciting aspects about living in Alaska is the abundance of wildlife--like catching a glimpse of beluga whales in Tumagain Arm. Whale-watching is a big pastime for people all over the world, and while Anchorage's whale-viewing may be somewhat limited, it's not difficult to explore other places in Alaska that are prime areas to see whales up close and personal. Glacier Bay Lodge, located in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve near the town of Gustavus, 60 miles west of Juneau, is the perfect place for viewing. The park embraces 3.3 million acres, with marine waters taking up one-fifth of its area. An amazing and ever-shifting infrastructure of wildlife, glaciers calving into icebergs and amazing light, the park has everything an outdoor enthusiast could want. Getting there is simple--a quick flight to Juneau, an even quicker flight to Gustavus, and finally a ferry ride to Bartlett Cove in the park.
