GHANA TO SUBSIDIZE SOME HOUSING.

The Government of Ghana is exploring a plan that would subsidize mortgages to promote home ownership for Ghana's workers. At a sod-cutting ceremony in late February, Ghana's Minister of Works and housing observed that the current cost of building would make it difficult for workers to acquire and fully own their own homes at retirement. Subsidized housing is nothing new in Ghana. In the late 90s the Government built some 7,000 homes for Ghana's working class. They were allotted to workers at heavily subsidized rents. But problems collecting even the low rents almost immediately materialized and the project ran into trouble...
