The solution to the problem Susan Headden revealed in her piece about how students get placed in remedial courses ["How the Other Half Tests," September/October 2011] is complicated. Some students arrive at college less prepared than others--that fact won't change. What needs to change is how we serve all students. The student who hasn't taken a math class in years may score the same as a student whose English is so limited that he couldn't understand the test questions, or a student straight out of high school who has always felt overwhelmed by math. But these students need different supports...
