CUSTOM CLUBS, HIGH-TECH ANALYSIS TOP WISH LISTS

Teeing it up with a valued business associate is great, but if you're feeling really generous you can offer up a gift of golf that lasts more than one round on a sunny afternoon. Michael Marston, founder and CEO of Golf Colorado.com, says two golf-gift ideas are particularly hot right now--and we're not talking about the latest martini-carrying golf bag or fuzzy clubhead protector. We're talking customized clubs, and high-tech stroke analysis with corrective lessons.

Here are a few places to go for either, or both:

DIMENSION Z GOLF

Don Ingermann retired as CEO of Ben Hogan Co. about a decade ago, but within a year he became restless and founded Dimension Z in Arvada, making custom "professionally fit, precision-made" clubs available not just to pros but to the masses.

Surprisingly, these custom-made clubs cost about the same that mass-produced clubs from the major manufacturers do when they're first introduced--before they're gradually reduced for clearance.

Ingermann says he has data that proves his customers take an average of five or six strokes off their scores within the first 30 to 60 days after they get their new clubs. "I've taken tour players and taken three strokes off. And I've taken 40-handicappers and taken 20 strokes off," he says.

A Dimension Z customized steel iron retails for $100 and a graphite wood retails for $175. Gift certificates are available.

GOLFTEC

With four locations in the Denver area, GolfTEC combines lessons from a PGA pro with patented diagnostic technology.

"We have video cameras and ball-launch monitors so we can show the student everything that is happening with their swing," says Joe Assell, one of GolfTEC's founders.

A one-hour initial evaluation costs $150.

After that, half-hour lessons can be purchased in various packages, all of which include video and motion analysis. Offerings include a five-pack of lessons for $325 or 25 lessons for $1,995. Individual lessons also are available for $80 each.

Based in Denver, GolfTEC has 25 stores nationwide. The company has a "wall of fame" recognizing customers who have shot the best round of their life after going to GolfTEC, and Assell says that last year 700 customers achieved lifetime bests.
