CITIZEN SECURITY IN THE AMERICAS

San SALVADOR, JUNE 5-7

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador, Hugo Martínez, announced during his visit to the OAS Permanent Council that "Citizen Security in the Americas" will be the central theme of the next OAS General Assembly, which will take place in San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador, June 5 to 7, 2011.

Secretary Martínez stated that his government seeks to "increase awareness among the Member States of a conflict that is present throughout the hemisphere." adding that in so achieving he will encourage the Member States to promote "the adoption of strategic guidelines, measures, and policies to reinforce international cooperation in the fight against this scourge," from better legislation coordination to the attention and care of victims.

"Public Security is a constant threat to our societies and as such is one of the main concerns of citizens in every corner of the hemisphere," stated Martínez, who during the discussions advocated for a "multidimensional" approach to citizen safety and security.
