Gender and Editorial Outcomes at Legislative Studies Quarterly:
The Reviewer Pool
A recent issue of the Legislative Studies Section’s newsletter, The
Legislative Scholar, had a very informative discussion of gender
issues related to the section. Some of the contributions made refer-
ence to Legislative Studies Quarterly. I recently shared information
about the gender of authors who submitted work to the journal
over the last few years. I want to add to that information some
details regarding our reviewer pool.
Given the quantity of names involved, the numbers reported below
are based only on manuscripts received during the 2018 calendar
year. We counted a reviewer once per round of reviews. Again, as a
frame of reference, the newsletter reported that 22% of Legislative
Studies section’s members are women. Overall, female scholars are
25% of LSQ’s reviewer pool.
In terms of publication recommendations made, female reviewers
recommend accept 10% of the time while male scholars recom-
mend accept 11% of the time. Female reviewers recommend R&R
26% of the time while male scholars also recommend R&R 26%
of the time. Female reviewers recommend reject 15% of the time
while male scholars recommend reject 25% of the time. Female re-
viewers are unavailable to review or fail to return a review before a
decision is made 49% of the time while male reviewers are unavail-
able to review or fail to return a review 38% of the time.
We will track this data going forward in order to share it on a
regular basis.
