WHEN THE NEW YORK TIMES penned an article called "Why We're Freaking Out About Substack," they were talking about the big media conglomerates, of which they are apart, and how they are suddenly competing with newsletters, of all things.

A lot has been said about this "disruption" of the media. The New York Times, for one, has lost many editors to Substack where they can write a weekly newsletter, charge their readers a monthly fee to subscribe to it, and earn more than their NYT salaries doing so.

The media companies were quick to get on board: many of them establishing newsletter programs and offering revenue share options to writers to compete. But newsletters are not the biggest threat the media faces--especially now that Generation Z is involved.
