General Communication Inc. has received final approval from the Regulatory Commission of Alaska to provide competitive local telephone service in the Fairbanks and Juneau markets. The commission approved an Interconnection Agreement between Alaska Communications Systems and GCI, removing the last obstacle to the competition.
