The author was born in Havana and is comfortable with her character Enrique Florit, who came from Cuba to make a life in California and Las Vegas with his magician father. Enrique is brilliant, which comes in handy, especially around gambling. Another character is Leila Rezvani, from Tehran, dreaming of finding a great love but instead settling for an arranged marriage. A third teenager is Marta, who escapes poverty and an abusive marriage in El Salvador, coming to California...
