The solution to these progressively worse nightmares is quite simple: the Wireless Garage Sentry from DesignTech International, Springfield, Va. The device comes in two parts--a sensor that attaches to the inside of the garage door and a receiver that plugs into any electric outlet within the house. The sensor, which operates on a lithium battery, is mounted so that the internal mercury switch is at a 45 [degrees] angle. Any time the status of the door changes (it is opened or closed), the sensor sends a signal to the receiver to update the position information.
