When the Smaldone brothers bought Gaetano's Italian restaurant in the late forties, they served up more than food, and made the still-operating restaurant a landmark.

Eugene and Clyde Smaldone had long criminal histories before they were age 15. By the time they bought Gaetano's in their 40s, they were kingpins in a Denver organized-crime ring.

Gaetano's was the hub of an extensive criminal enterprise that included gambling, bootlegging and money laundering. Eugene was known as the patriarch of the Denver crime family. The two brothers brought in younger brother Chauncey, and the three were the bosses of a Mafia operation.
