Driving Mr. Graham

Riding in the backseat, taking down a few notes on the way to an event somewhere across the state, limited cell phone service calls back to the office, a small order of French fries to pacify my three-year old (now four) daughter, non-drowsy Dramamine(R) for car sickness, maybe a little Luke Combs over the radio... yep, that pretty much sums up the last ten months. The life of a Bar President is a busy year to say the least! I remember one of my counterparts a couple of years ago kept track of the time spent on bar duties (i.e., essentially "billing" the Bar his/her regular hourly rate for Presidential tasks performed). The hypothetical "invoice" reached into six figures as I recall. Numerous meetings, speaking engagements, telephone conferences, articles, letters, e-mails (oh, those never-ending e-mails). Sure... no one in this position can claim it's all business all of the time. That is a mischaracterization of the situation. But the demands of the office are substantial (and likely only growing in both number and character). I would say that bar service in general is certainly one of those things in life that if you choose to do it, you fundamentally get out of it what you put into it. I know personally that I have received so much over the past eight years, having met a lot of really great Wyoming lawyers along the way and having gone to a lot of interesting places that I might not otherwise have seen or been. And I have really enjoyed virtually every second of this ride, even when it got hard, and so thank you to the membership for having given me and my family this...
