In 2010, Américas magazine began celebrating the bicentennial of many of the countries in Latin America. In this edition, the spotlight is on Mexico's 200th year of independence hailed by that singular tradition, El Grito (¡Viva México!), and the 100th anniversary of the 1910 Mexican Revolution.

With the door to the past open, we take a look at the fascinating and turbulent history of three intriguing places in the region: the once-influential and still beautiful Granada, Nicaragua, located on a strategic route for forty-niners headed west to California; Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay, a port city once hotly disputed by the Spanish and the Portuguese but prized today for its peaceful cobblestone streets and unique mix of architectural styles; and the solitary island of Cubagua, Venezuela, where only traces remain of the fabulous wealth in pearls that once drew fortune seekers and pirates.
