"Protecting the Rule of Law," President's Message, March 2019

Mr. President, I just read your article in Colorado Lawyer— timely, very well structured, and one which should be taken to heart (and action) by all attorneys, regardless of political persuasion and affiliation. Our constitutional system is under serious and daily attack, which is unprecedented in our history. The legislative and judicial branches are our primary defenses but, as you note, it is the special calling and duty of all attorneys to defend checks and balances, judicial independence, and the rule of law in every possible forum.

Thank you for so eloquently reminding us of our obligations.

Mr. Vaught, Thank you for that article you wrote in the March edition of Colorado Lawyer. In the last few years, I have become, and I encourage my colleagues to do the same, an advocate for clarifying and explaining the "rule of law" and legal ethics to everyone in my social circle, as opportunities arise. This includes explaining the "law" and the issue in the most objective manner possible, as to educate people on the situations that make the news (it seems nearly nightly now). My goal is to educate, so that people can make informed decisions (including voting), based on their values, about what they are seeing, hearing, and reading. My secondary goal is to explain/critique questionable behavior of other lawyers, as a defense to our occupation. My wife often asks me why I bother to take the time, and a reason I always give her is that I have a responsibility as a lawyer to do so. Your article is an eloquent defense of this proposition.

I had a question about the railroad route involved. Mrs...
