Matt Obrecht

Basic Bio:

My name is Matt Obrecht. I'm a 2006 graduate of the University of Wyoming College of Law. Besides a brief stint working at a small litigation firm in Cheyenne, my legal career has been entirely spent at the Wyoming Legislative Service Office (LSO). The LSO is the nonpartisan staff for the Wyoming Legislature. We draft all the bills, staff the committees and prepare the legislative budget and revenue projections in conjunction with our colleagues in the executive branch. Before law school, 1 was a wildland firefighter. 1 was a member of the Roosevelt Interagency Hotshot Crew based out of Fort Collins. My crew fought fires throughout the west, from Arizona to Washington. It was a fantastic experience. I learned how to push myself both physically and mentally and made many life-long friends.

I became a lawyer because my dad suggested I learn another trade. He didn't think fighting fire was something I would want to be doing when I was 50. Of course, he was right, but that's not what I thought at the time. I just wanted to fight fire during the summer, hunt during the fall, and ski during the winter. I took the LSAT to get him off my back and have now been practicing for almost 20 years.
