Sharkey said it is harder for frequent fliers to secure upgrades and free tickets using their miles, so the motivation to fly a certain number of miles to achieve elite status has weakened. America West FlightFund

In the aftermath of the America West-US Airways merger, which keeps the newly formed US Airways in the Star Alliance, the longstanding frequent flyer partnerships between America West and both British Airways and Northwest (which participate in the competing oneworld and SkyTeam alliances, respectively) will be terminated. FlightFund members can continue earning miles for British Air flights through December 31. Miles can be redeemed for awards booked on BA through February 15, 2006, with award travel completed by January 31, 2007. March 31, 2006 is the last day of reciprocal mileage earning and redemption on Northwest flights, and all award travel must be completed by March 31, 2007.
