This is my first issue as editor of The Progressive, and I couldn't be prouder of what we are doing here.

I'm delighted to bring you our cover story by Diane Ravitch, an excerpt from her forthcoming book on the threat of education privatization.

Stay tuned for details of a live web chat we will be hosting with Ravitch on our new Public School Shakedown site, where we are bringing together public school activists from around the country.

Just before we went to press, I drove down to Chicago to meet with a group of teachers who are on the front lines in the battle against union-busting, school closures, and the subcontracting of our public education system to a dubious network of private concerns.

Helping to connect a nationwide network of pro-public school activists has been a thrilling project--and right in our wheelhouse as defenders of what Fighting Bob La Follette called "the public interest versus private greed."

Speaking of right in our wheelhouse, we have a terrific interview with Noam Chomsky in this issue. His trenchant critique of the Obama Administration is even more relevant as we watch the President recycle arguments for illegal war--this time in Syria.

Also in this issue, Matt Rothschild has a wonderful inaugural column on how he got arrested in the state capitol building here in Madison, Wisconsin, for exercising his First Amendment rights.

On a personal note I want to thank Matt, who has been my editor, colleague, and friend here at The Progressive since I was a kid. Matt taught me to edit copy when I was an intern back in 1988. With his talent for organizing thoughts and communicating clearly, he has helped a generation of writers get their ideas across.
