When the Omaha World-Herald Foundation, John Gottschalk and other members of the World-Herald management team contributed funds to Creighton University School of Law to establish The James L. Koley '54 Scholarship in Constitutional Law, I was both honored and deeply humbled by their generosity. As a 1954 graduate of the Creighton University School of Law, I have fond memories from my time as a student at Creighton and great respect for the quality of education provided to so many fine people who have become outstanding members of the legal profession.

As part of the endowed professorship, I am grateful that Creighton University School of Law instituted a lecture series to bring highly regarded constitutional law experts to Omaha to discuss important topics of the day relating to constitutional law. I am also pleased that Koley Jessen P.C., of which I am "Of Counsel," honored me by funding an annual scholarship for years 2003-2007 for law students who demonstrate an aptitude and interest in First Amendment and related constitutional issues. During the last two years, it has been my privilege to meet each of the speakers and scholarship recipients, and I would like to take this opportunity to briefly describe the background of each speaker brought to Creighton for the Koley Lecture Series in order to emphasize what a wonderful opportunity this lecture series provides to showcase prominent speakers on current constitutional topics.

I was delighted to see and hear Rodney A. Smolla as the speaker for the 2004 Koley Lecture Series. Mr. Smolla's education, clerking experiences, law practice, professorship and deanship have distinguished him as one of the foremost scholars on constitutional law issues in the United States...
