Sustainable food security: Biotechnology
and seeds systems in Asia and Africa (USDA)
Scope: The Agriculture Department’s Foreign
Agricultural Service seeks applications for the Enabling
Agricultural Innovations for Sustainable Food Security:
Biotechnology and Seeds Systems in Asia and Africa
announcement to partner with a U.S. land-grant
university to carry out trainings and provide technical
assistance for select Asian and African decision-makers,
technical experts and stakeholders focusing on informed
strategies for enabling the science-based adoption of
agricultural biotechnologies, including incorporating
biotechnology into national and regional initiatives to
modernize and strengthen seed systems for innovation.
Deadline: Aug. 17, 2020.
Funds: $350,000 for one award.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities.
Areas: USDA said the purpose of the program is
to: enhance understanding of policymakers and
stakeholders in the Philippines of the role of modern
biotechnology in agricultural innovation, and how such
biotechnological innovations can be adopted with
appropriate science- and risk-based considerations;
enhance the understanding of African country
governments’ policymakers and technical experts with
responsibilities relevant to the African Union of the role
of modern biotechnology in agricultural innovation, and
how such biotechnological innovations can be adopted
with appropriate science- and risk-based considerations,
especially for seed production and trade; and identify
and share ways in which biotechnological innovations
can advance food security, and what trade policies
in the Philippines and in the African Union may be
needed to help ensure access by their farmers to such
innovations.

Socially Disadvantaged Groups Grant (USDA)
Scope: The Agriculture Department’s Rural Business-
Cooperative Service seeks applications for the Socially
Disadvantaged Groups Grant to provide technical
assistance to socially disadvantaged groups in rural
areas.
Deadline: Aug. 10, 2020.
Funds: $3 million total for up to 30 awards of up to
$175,000.
Eligibility: Cooperatives, groups of cooperatives and
cooperative development centers, as well as Native
American tribal governments.
Areas: USDA said examples of technical assistance
are feasibility studies, business plans, strategic planning
and leadership training.

Scope: The Agriculture Department’s U.S. Forest
Service seeks applications for the FY2021 Forest
Service Northeast and Midwest Landscape Scale
Restoration announcement to support high-impact
projects that promote collaborative, science-based
restoration of priority forest landscapes, leverage public
and private resources, and further priorities identied in
each state’s Forest Action Plan or equivalent restoration
strategy.
Deadline: Sept. 17, 2020.
Funds: $4 million total for up to ve awards ranging from
$25,000 to $600,000.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities; state, local and
Native American tribal governments; and independent
school districts; among others.
Areas: USDA said examples of projects include
but are not limited to: water quality and watershed
health improvement; wildlife habitat improvement;
demonstration projects that both achieve on-the-ground
accomplishments for a specic area and also provide
sites for conservation education and tech transfer;
ecosystem services projects; community tree-planting
projects in communities with a population of less than
50,000; strategic outreach efforts to land managers/
owners facing threats from urban sprawl, invasive
species and wildre; and complementary efforts to
improve rural prosperity, as long as the project includes
on-the-ground outcomes as well.
