Focusing on Ansel Adams' less familiar work.

PositionMuseums Today - Ansel Adams: Early Works - Brief article

"Ansel Adams: Early Works" focuses on the masterful, small-scale (and less familiar) prints--that are rich in middle tones--made by the famous photographer from the 1920s into the 1950s. This collection reveals the foundation of Adams' expertise that led to the high-gloss and -contrast prints manufactured in the 1970s and 1980s, which coincided with the emergence of the first retail galleries devoted to photography.

"The exceptional thing about these [images] is that they were printed at the time they were taken, a rare look into how Adams' mind was thinking leading to the iconic images we all know," explains Hava Guervish, director of art2art, which organized the show. "For some, there are only one or two prints in existence. It's unusual to be able to find a large collection of Ansel Adams prints of this caliber."
