In this series of many short sketches contained under three broad titles, Foreign Service Officers stationed in Port-au-Prince and Santo Domingo report on their experiences as an earthquake rapidly disintegrated Haitian society.

Henning tells the story of an embassy bodyguard who lost his wife and two children before crawling from the rubble of his home with a dislocated shoulder, a broken hand and arm, and his surviving -7-year-old son. After the two made the four-mile trek to the embassy, they received treatment from its sole doctor. Broadening his perspective, Henning then described his efforts to assist Haitians in the interval before USAID was able to expand its efforts.
