The Energy Conservation Index has ranked which states have the best (and worst) energy saving habits. To compile the Index, the data scientists at OhmConnect--a company that works with power providers to reward households for saving energy--asked Americans about their energy-saving techniques to determine which states care the most about their carbon footprints.

Besides being the hottest state in the U.S., Florida leads the nation in energy-reduction efforts. Texas and Georgia, which rank in the top 10 hottest states, also make the list of the top 10 most energy-conscious.

Seventy percent of residents from states in the West say they put "a lot" of thought or "more than most" into their energy saving--57% of the Northeast...
