Communities across the country are finding that Internet home pages are a relatively easy and economical way to reach many of their taxpayers. But merely creating a Web site is no longer enough. The success of these Web pages, however, depends a great deal on their particular layouts. This concise article details the different attributes of a successful government Web site. At the top of the list is ease of use, and the article points out that visitors will not stay long at a Web site that is difficult to maneuver. Governments can make their sites visitor friendly by 1) using consistent themes throughout the site so that people do not have to reorient themselves as they move around; 2) equipping the site with swift navigation features that allow visitors to move from one place to another with a single click; and 3) not forgetting the little things, such as limiting the number of underlined words...
