FIVE DAYS AT MEMORIAL

Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital

By Sheri Fink

A former physician and disaster-zone relief worker, Fink won a Pulitzer Prize for her investigation of the events at New Orleans's Memorial Medical Center immediately after Hurricane Katrina. In this account, Fink explores the aftermath of the hurricane. When rescuers arrived at Memorial four days after the tragedy, 45 patients were dead, and 20 of them had elevated levels of painkillers and sedatives in their blood. The book probes the history and ethics of euthanasia and poses many troubling questions about who was responsible for these deaths. (**** SELECTION Nov/Dec 2013)
