BACKGROUND

Hansen, Bradshaw, Malmrose & Erickson (HBME) is a Certified Public Accounting firm located in Bountiful, Utah, specializing in corporate and individual tax returns, audits and reviews for small businesses, nonprofits and government entities as well as business advisory services. The firm opened its doors in 1980 and has enjoyed more than 35 years of steady growth. Today, the firm has nearly 20 employees and generates approximately $4 million in gross revenue annually.

"We treat each accounting opportunity like a potential multi-year annuity, so in our earlier days, when HBME was asked to do a complicated tax return worth $500, the partners and I accepted the business," says Lynn Hansen, a partner at HBME. "We knew after 20 years of business with that company it would produce much greater results."

Even with its accounting acumen, HBME's growth could not be achieved on its own. The firm's partners turned to Mountain America Credit Union to help fulfill a number of its financial service needs.

THE SITUATION

When HBME outgrew its Salt Lake City office, the partners decided to find a location that better suited the firm's needs. The partners decided they wanted to invest in purchasing a building to support future growth rather than lease space.

"Mountain America, along with Don Youngberg, was instrumental in helping the partners secure a business loan to buy our building," shares HBME partner, Clarke Bradshaw. "The loan was secured, and because of some smart personal financial advice from Mountain America, the partners were able to pay off the loan early."

According to Don Youngberg, an assistant vice president for business services at Mountain America, HBME had been frustrated with increasing fees from its previous financial institution.
