Excellent article on the "First Flight Centennial" in the October issue. As a Tar Heel born and bred (even spending formative years near Kill Devil Hills), it again raises the question for me of why some in this state feel so attached to this fame claim.

For North Carolina to have "first in flight" as its de facto motto makes about as much sense as Massachusetts claiming "first in phone" or New Jersey, "first in light"--and Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison actually lived in those states. If we...
