Companies are getting serious about managing employee Internet use. According to a recent survey developed by Robert Half Technology, more than three-quarters of chief information officers (CIOs) polled recently said their firms have either installed content-filtering or blocking software, instituted policies explaining acceptable web browsing, or a combination of both.

The national poll includes responses from more than 1,400 CIOs of U.S. companies with 100 or more employees. When asked to describe company policy on employee access to the web, 37 percent said they employ a combination of corporate policy and software to restrict certain content.
