  2. EXPLANATORY NOTE

Set forth below are a detailed table of contents. a list of illustra-rims, and a aubject-matter index for the official JAG Carps history

6 as part of the national bicentennial ob-published with only a summary table of i.

Complete finding aids were not prepared in 1976 because of pressure of time. The pasaage of several years has revealed the desirability of such aids, eren if published

e hiitor) published in 19i6 is organized In ten numbereri chap-nine of which are divided into eightpeight unnumbered secThe sections vary in format, but most are short biog-raphies or informal casenotes The detailed table of contents is merely a listing of chapter titles and section headings. These titles and headings do not give a complete description of the contents of the history. However, it was felt that addition of new headings would be misleading and confusing. because they would not appear in the text of the 1975 history itself. ;Liareorer, the eubjeet-matter index is sufficiently ileta~led to meet any normal research needs.

The 1976 history include? eixt>--eight illustrations A11 are approximately one-half page in size, and all are reproductions of photopaphs or paintings, except far ~ R O

line draaings (Figures 39 and 2)

and two orgamzational charts (Figures 49 and 50). The illustratioiii are listed iii numerical order in section 111, following the detailed table of contents.

The tvo appendices are set forth after the list of illustrations. on the assumption that, if included in the original 1975 history, the? would hare been placed after the text but before an)- index. Appendin A ia a list of Judge Advocates General of the Army and persons occupying analogous positions. This list provides an incomplete ehronolog) of the Army JAG Corps. The second appendix is a list of commandants of The Judge Advocate General's School. included be-came of the great importance which that inaitituion ha6 acquired for the JAG Corpe.

    separately and seven years late.

hare been listed under as many different headings as possible. .411 personal names. and most names of institutions, publieations, and

    i6

other items have been included. Events of importance in JAG Corps history, such as courts-martial and revisions of military law, are listed under several headings. Major historical events general in nature, such aa wars, have been listed. Hou-ever, specific battles and rnilitarg units have not.

Topics in section V are lisred in alphabetical order, disregarding a, an, and fhe. Words beginning with Mac or Mc are listed in alphabetical order together with other words beginning with m.

A number of statutes and court decisions are mentioned in the 1975 history. Hou-ever, since that work is not a law book, no case tables or other similar aids are presented. In general, these legal authorities may be found by iooking for specific names or dates under the topic headings Acts, Army Regulations, Brticles of War, Cases, Decisions, Legal Publications, Manual for Courts-klartial, and Regulations.

Selection of items to he listed and as8ignment of topic headings have been made by the editor of the Military LalcRe7jiew. Such se-leetian and assignment do not necessarily reflect the viers of The Judge Advocate General's School, the Department of the Army, or any other governmental agency.
