FINAT Label Awards 2003: converters from four continents took 18 awards in FINAT's 23rd annual competition.

The FINAT International Labeling Competition has resulted in awards to 18 converting companies spanning four continents. FINAT, the label association based in Europe, has been conducting the award competition for 23 years.

The winning labels span a wide range of product types and print processes. The association gives awards in eight end use categories and six print process categories, as well as awards for alternative uses and innovation.

Pilot Italia SpA's labels for Franconia wines took the award in the alcoholic beverages category. They were printed in a combination of rotary letterpress, screen, and hot foil blocking on paper.

In the food labeling category, Australia's Adelaide Spectrum Labels Pty. Ltd. won with white film labels for Pacific Oysters Kilpatrick, printed UV rotary letterpress.

The Label Makers, from the UK, used roll-fed offset and hot foil blocking to produce the winning labels for Carolina Home Fragrances in the household applications category.

The winner in the cosmetics and toiletries category was Doga Etiket of Turkey, with its beverage label, printed UV letterpress with silver foil.

Letterpress again was the choice of Kimbells Pack Incorporated, of The Philippines, which took the prize in the pharmaceutical category with its labels for Donalin, printed on metalized paper with gold hot foil.

Two companies won top honors in the security labeling category. Schreiner GmbH & Co., of Germany, was selected for its tamper-evident Lastraumsiegel labels on a PET-based substrate, printed with a combination of flexo, letterpress and digital print, eight inks, plus varnish and overlamination. Novelprint Sistemas de Etiquetagem Ltda. of Brazil received the award for tamper-evidence on telephone cards for Alo sorte. The construction included a PE face stock, a PE liner, a rubber based adhesive and overlamination with a metalized polyester, using flexography.

Iwaco A/S, of Denmark, was the winner in the coupon/leaflet label category, producing a label incorporating a leaflet listing ingredients and dosage recommendation for a container of Nycomed-Biovit tablets. The illustration on the paper carrier label was produced on a flexo press, and the image on the paper leaflet was printed litho.
