The traditional financial industry faces a short-term challenge. Analysts have expressed concerns over the local banking industry's risk concentration in commercial real estate, with fears of overbuilding prompting downgrading by investment consultants. And although venture financing in Utah showed a dramatic increase in 2000, recent market performance has cooled the enthusiasm of many potential investors. That's good news for financial institutions: new business owners and entrepreneurs are going back to the hank for backing. In the professional services, a potential state Supreme Court decision may cause a sea of change. The Utah State Bar voted early in 2001 to let lawyers partner with nonlawyers in business arrangements. What may follow are one-stop shopping providers, wherein lawyers, accountants, investment managers and others team to offer comprehensive services.
