fellowships to experienced scientists who wish to make
major changes in the direction of their research careers
or who wish to broaden their scientic background by
acquiring new research capabilities as independent
investigators in research elds relevant to the missions
of participating NIH institutes and centers.
Deadline: Aug. 8, 2020; Dec. 8, 2020; and April 8, 2021.
Funds: The number of awards depends on
appropriations and the submission of a sufficient
number of quality applications.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities; for-prot
organizations, including small businesses; and nonprot
organizations; among others.
Areas: NIH said funding will enable individuals with at
least seven years of research experience beyond the
doctorate (e.g., associate professors, full professors),
and who have progressed to the stage of independent
investigator, to take time from regular professional
responsibilities for the purpose of receiving training to
increase their scientic capabilities. In most cases, the
award is used to support sabbatical experiences for
established, independent scientists seeking support for
retraining or additional career development.

Areas: NIH said it is expected that the mentored
training experience will provide a strong foundation
in research design, methods and analytic techniques
appropriate to the proposed research; enhanced ability
to conceptualize and think through research problems
with increasing independence; experience conducting
research using appropriate, state-of-the-art methods,
as well as presenting and publishing the research
ndings as rst author; and the opportunity to interact
with members of the scientic community at appropriate
scientic meetings and workshops; among other
activities.
