After $66,000 in first-year revenues and a feature in Playboy, it looks as if Judy Gilliam's Naughty But Nice basket business won't have trouble keeping it up.

"I'm amazed at how popular they are," the Concord telephone-operator-turned-entrepreneur says. Gilliam, 46, contends that her adult baskets are "not vulgar and appeal to a lot of people. We've even had pastors' wives come in and buy naughty baskets for friends."

Contents vary to suit individual tastes -- like the edible bras and condoms. Also available: sex games (Spin for Sin), randy candy pills that purport to encourage multiple orgasms, Kamasutra brand love potions, plus the ever-popular whips, handcuffs and feathered masks. "All in fun," insists Gilliam, who was partly inspired to go into the business after a friend quipped, "Stick and stones may break my bones, but whips and chains excite me."

Gilliam got a handle on the basket business after eight years as a self-employed hairdresser and then seven years with Concord Telephone Co. Her real inspiration came after her husband bought her a basket as a gift. She found herself thinking, "Hey, I could put together better-looking and more interesting baskets myself." Proof of that came in March when Gift Basket Review, a trade magazine, picked her Desert Storm welcome-home "basket" (it was really a camouflage hat) as one of the 10 most creative in the nation.
