In "Silent Femmes" (April), Amy Sullivan never suggested simply tossing out the "boys' rules" and developing some new ones. We're not asking for "girls' rules"; we just want them a bit more androgynous. I realize the boys at the top are never going to create a structure that lacks a sports or war motif, which is why we've got to get a few more girls promoted. Maybe if half the people making the decisions were women--not just a token one or two--and therefore had shared the painful experience of shouting their way into recognition, they'd have both the inclination and clout to turn down the volume of those editorial meetings and transform them into an environment where smart, clear, concise, but quieter voices could be heard.
