PositionGRAPH - Immigration in Europe - Brief article

Europe is in the midst of a migrant crisis. In 2015, more than 1.2 million migrants arrived in the member states of the European Union (E.U.) seeking asylum, or official protection. Some had fled poverty in other parts of Europe, like Albania and Kosovo, in the hopes of getting a fresh economic start. But the vast majority of the newcomers had made harrowing journeys across the Mediterranean Sea to escape war and persecution in parts of the Middle East and Africa. The graph at right shows where most of the European Union's asylum seekers came from in 2015. The flood of migrants continues today.
