When Tim and Carolyn Balty made their way to Alaska with their two children 25 years ago, their plan was to work with a missionary fellowship and school. Settling in Fairbanks, they found themselves in the midst of a major recession and decided they had better look for a second source of income. While house hunting, they managed to find that second income incorporated into a much-needed larger home. After spending five years at that location, they upgraded to a larger residence with more space for guests. They have been managing the Fairbanks Downtown Bed & Breakfast ever since, providing hospitality and lodging for visitors from both in and out of state.

Located almost right in the center of town, the B&B sits on the corner of Gillam Way and 15th Avenue. The Baltys reside in the main level of the home, with the entire second floor devoted to the Bed and Breakfast. There are five guest rooms, each with a private bath, as well as a full kitchen and common area. Amenities include cable television, wireless Internet and a computer in the common area for guests to use. Breakfast each morning is continental style with fruits, drinks and Carolyn's own special muffin recipe that guests have loved and complimented her on for years. The B&B is unique in that it is one of the few AAA-rated bed and breakfasts in Fairbanks.

"I am inspected yearly to ascertain the quality of the facility remains high," Carolyn says. "With my many years of experience as a hostess in the industry, I offer each guest service and hospitality that meets their specific needs."
