ARLINGTON, Virginia--The Air Force Research Laboratory and the F-35 Joint Program Office have opened a new facility to implement commercial digital engineering best practices as the advanced aircraft struggles with delays.
The F-35 is the Defense Department's most expensive weapon system program and is in the midst of schedule delays caused by the development of the aircraft's Technology Refresh 3, or TR-3, suite of hardware and software upgrades.
A Government Accountability Office report on the program released in May said the program originally planned to deliver the first F-35 with TR-3 hardware and software in July 2023, but the upgrades were delayed until June 2024 and will be less capable than originally planned due to supply chain and software issues.
