On Black. White., a six-part reality show on FX that premiered March 8, Rose Wurgel, 18, underwent a major transformation: through the art of makeup, she and her white family from Santa Monica, Calif., were made to look black. They shared a house for six weeks with a black family from Atlanta that was made up to look white. Upfront spoke to Wurgel about living in a different skin color.

Were you treated differently when you looked black?

Yes, I was treated really unfriendly and somewhat distastefully by one store manager, where she was not respecting me the same way as she was the other customers. And I was being kind and obviously polite.

Were there times when you wanted to give up?

Totally. It was six weeks of a lot of self-judgment and self-doubt and questioning of the society...
