Scope: The National Cancer Institute seeks (K99/R00)
applications for the NCI Pathway to Independence
Award for Outstanding Early Stage Postdoctoral
Researchers announcement to increase and maintain
a strong cohort of new and talented, NCI-supported,
independent investigators.
Deadline: Feb. 26, 2021.
Funds: $2.7 million in FY2022 to fund up to 16 awards.
The maximum project period is ve years.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities; for-prot
organizations, including small businesses; nonprot
organizations; and state, local and Native American
tribal governments; among others.
Areas: NCI said the K99/R00 award is intended for
individuals who require no more than two additional
years of mentored research and career development
(K99 phase) before transitioning to the independent
stage (R00 phase) of the program. The strongest
applicants will propose a well-conceived plan for one to
two years of substantive mentored research and career
development that will help them become competitive
candidates for tenure-track faculty positions and prepare
them to launch robust, independent research programs.

Scope: The National Institute of General Medical
Sciences seeks (R21/R33) Phased Innovation Award
applications for the Exploring the Scientic Value of
Existing or New Sepsis Human Biospecimen Collections
announcement to support efficient collection, banking
and sharing of biospecimens and associated clinical
data from critically ill patients, ultimately for use in
mechanistic research on sepsis.
Deadline: Nov. 16, 2022.
Funds: For the (R21) phase of up to two years, a total
of $275,000 in direct costs over the two-year (R21)
project period; support for the (R33) phase award may
not exceed two years and is limited to $500,000 in any
single year of the (R33) phase.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities; for-prot
organizations, including small businesses; nonprot
organizations; state, local, special district and Native
American tribal governments; and independent school
districts; among others.
Areas: NIGMS said studies should focus on: (1)
assessment of the utility of existing biospecimen
repositories from critically ill and septic patients for
future mechanistic research or (2) development of
improved methods for de novo collection and analysis
of biospecimens from critically ill patients, ultimately for
mechanistic studies of sepsis.
