Experiential learning: providing real-world context to classroom content.

PositionEXTRAORDINARY EDUCATION

This focus began in 2005 to expound, upon the education students receive in the classroom to give them hands-on experiences. These experiences include prestigious internship opportunities, study abroad opportunities, civic engagement and unique classes such as The President's Life Skills Seminar.

Study Abroad

When it comes to gaining cultural experiences, HPU students have the opportunity to take their studies abroad to 24 universities in 17 countries - exposing them to worlds they've never seen before and encouraging them to thrive in new environments. Students also have the opportunity to take an intensive four-hour course in May, known as a Maymester, which primarily involves traveling. One example offers art majors the ability to study painting in Rome and Florence for the month.

Internships and Undergraduate Research

Hundreds of HPU students also land prestigious internships at companies and organizations such as IBM, NASA, Wells Fargo, Madison Square Garden, Volvo, MTV Networks, International Home Furnishings Center, Merrill Lynch, National Institute of Health, and more where they begin their real-world work experience.

Often those internships include extensive undergraduate research in a variety of fields. Students like Mary Funke, a chemistry major at HPU who spent her summer performing research in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at Cornell University, are setting the bar high. Funke was selected out of a large pool of applicants to be one of 28 student researchers.
