Executions in America.

Since 1930, more than 4,800 people have been executed in the United States, according to data from the Department of Justice. Today, 38 states have the death penalty on the books, but they vary widely in how often they actually carry out executions.

Since 1976, about 82 percent of all executions have been carried out in the South; about 11 percent in the Midwest about 6 percent in the West; and the remaining percentage in the Northeast.

The bar graph on this page shows the number of executions in the 20 states with the most executions between 1930 and 2005 (through mid-January).

The pie graph shows the percentage of Americans who supported or opposed the death penalty in a 2004 public opinion poll.
