The sophomore release by the New York City-based salsa powerhouse band La Excelencia could be tagged as "steamsalsa" (a musical vision looking backward and forward, yet residing in a new musical timeline). At first listen, Mi Tumbao Socialis reminiscent of the early days of Willie Colón and Héctor Lavoe, as well as other bands from the 1970s, the golden era of salsa. After a closer listen, the production starts to reveal its deeper social and political messages within its ten original scores. From immigration to infidelity, from prejudice to profiling issues; the selections evoke a straightforward and realistic look at the everyday problems in the life of Latinos today.
