Paul Fulton has just two hobbies: golf and Carolina. "Chapel Hill gets in your blood," Fulton, 69, says. A 1957 grad, the former president of Sara Lee was dean of Carolina's business school. A member of the university's board of trustees and chairman of its capital campaign, he also is director of a political action committee focused on UNC Chapel Hill.

Formed in 2002, Citizens for Higher Education doled out $181,000 to candidates last year. It placed fifth among contributors to individual candidates for the General Assembly, spending more than some large corporations such as Progress Energy. The bipartisan PAC is active only in state elections and, in accordance with state rules, donates no more than $4,000 to any candidate. Last year, 90% of the office seekers it supported won. "We support the people who support the university," says Fulton, who is a registered Republican.
