Shortly after purchasing a home with a large fenced backyard, I walked into a humane society, saw a puppy in a box, picked him up, adopted him, and left. It was love at first sight. Days later, this small Husky/Golden mix puppy, given the name Sigfus, disappeared from my backyard. A runner at a nearby lake found Sigfus and, through an act of kindness, returned him to me. It was amazing how fast I attached to this animal. Our relationship continued to grow. He was family.

Years later, the Minnesota State Bar Association's first Animal Law Committee members gathered at my home for a party. Sigfus, then 13...
