The Centers for Disease Control, Atlanta, Ga., recommends the use of insect repellent products containing active ingredients that have been registered with the Environmental Protection Agency for use on skin and clothing. EPA registration indicates the materials have been reviewed and approved for efficacy and human safety when applied according to the instructions on the label.

The length of protection varies with the amount of active ingredient, ambient temperature, degree of physical activity/perspiration, water exposure, abrasive removal, and other factors. For extended protection, use a long lasting (microencapsulated) formula and reapply as necessary.

The EPA recommends the following precautions when using insect repellents:

* Apply only to exposed skin and clothing. Do not use under clothing.

* Never apply over cuts, wounds, or irritated skin.

* Do not apply to eyes or mouth--and use sparingly around ears.

* When using aerosols, do not spray directly on face; put it on hands first.

* Do not allow children to handle the product--apply it for them.
