When Petra Kelly died in late 1992, Parallax Press was left with a work in progress--a couple of thousand pages of the Green Party activist's speeches, interviews, and articles, which she and an editor were turning into a book. Parallax went ahead without the author who, on last meeting, less than a month before her mysterious death, had given her publisher a piece of the Berlin Wall--which, he says in a preface, "she herself was so instrumental in bringing down." These essays, as the subtitle says, range through the three principal areas that defined Kelly's life; each is preceded by a quotation that demonstrates her grounding in the reading and thinking that began in the 1960s when she was a teenager and young adult in the United States, informed by her childhood and later adulthood in her native Germany.
