From taking time to read a good novel to taking an extra few minutes for a close shave, extended-stay travelers balance the demands of work on the road with time for good-natured selfishness, according to the "Time Out for Travel", survey of 1,250 business men and women conducted by Residence Inn by Marriott and www.thetrip.com. Many travelers--especially those married with children--enjoy paying attention to themselves, but feel guilty about being unable to share in home activities and responsibilities.

Residence Inn has partnered with Stephen R. Covey, best-selling author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families, to provide 10 tips to help travelers make the most of their personal time when on an extended business trip:

  1. Make a list of books you want to read and tackle at least one while on the trip.

  2. Write an "I Love You," "I'm Proud of You," or "Have a Great Day" postcard to a loved one.

  3. Remember birthdays and anniversaries when traveling. Call or send a card.

  4. Brainstorm for special occasions in the upcoming year. Organize a surprise party or an intimate anniversary...
