Thank you for your review of Vivian Gornick's new book, Pity the Radical, on Emma Goldman (September/October 2011). I am glad to see attention paid to Goldman, yet I would like to contest some aspects of the review as well as the book. It is not accurate to state that Goldman "thought the professions should be shut to her gender." In "The Tragedy of Women's Emancipation" she explicitly states that it is "fair and just" for women to have professional opportunities; her point is that these women should not accept the restrictions of bourgeois respectability as the price of their success,...
