To quote from the May 2001 KLIATT review of the hardcover edition: This is a novel based on the real-life experience of the author, who spent three years in a TB sanitarium when she was 16 years old (in the 1940s). In the novel, April is diagnosed with TB just months after her father returns from fighting in WW II and she must stay in a California hospital enduring complete bed rest for months. The place seems exotic to those of us who think TB is just another serious disease for which there is medication--but Ellis points out in an afterword that even today three million people die of TB each year throughout the world, and we are now plagued with new strains of the disease that are resistant to antibiotics.

April's experiences in the hospital are quite amazing, really. And they are all based on Ellis's own experiences, including being courted by an Indian prince who also is a patient...
