This special double-issue of the magazine is all about schools: the threats they face from privatization; the inspiring teachers, students, activists, and community members who are defending them; and the great work going on, despite all obstacles, to educate students and make the world a better place

Free, high-quality public education, available to each and every child, is a cornerstone of American democracy. Lately, like so many other public goods, it has come under attack by the forces of greed.

A year ago, The Progressive launched the Public School Shakedown website to expose the threat of privatization and connect pro-public-school activists nationwide. I'm proud to showcase articles by some of our favorite contributors to that website in this issue:

Yohuru Williams takes on the corporate ed reformers' phony invocations of Martin Luther King Jr.

Jennifer Berkshire, who goes by the blogger handle Edushyster, files an important story from Chicago about the connection between gentrification and the closure of neighborhood schools.
